“What’s Hot” in the Startup HIT Sector?

Morgenthaler Ventures is a well-established Sand Hill Road private equity and venture capital firm that likes the Health Information Technology (HIT) and life science sectors –and among other things, specializes in getting behind startups (seed capital and Series A investments). I said that Morgenthaler is “well-established” and that’s probably an understatement. Morgenthaler is one of the longest running and most successful in the business, having placed bets on more than 300 companies over the years, including Apple and more recently, Practice Fusion, the free, web-based EHR company.
I ran across a story describing a HIT Startup Showcase that Morgenthaler helps organize each year and thought it might be interesting to share the names and some brief information about several of the “finalists” being considered for Series A ($2M-$5M) funding. By the way, although all of the companies listed below are seeking Series A funding, all were required to have a product on the market and real customers.
Here’s your chance to test your ideas about “what’s hot.”
- GSI Health delivers workflow, care coordination apps and health information exchange (HIE) solutions for hospitals that manage patients across the care continuum and outside the enterprise (Philadelphia, PA).
- Beyond Lucid Technologies offers a pre-hospital records or electronic health record – type (EHR) solution for ambulance providers, medics and first responders (Walnut Creek, CA).
- CarePlanners is a platform that enables a nationwide network of careplanners to help patients and caregivers better navigate their individual and ongoing experiences with the healthcare system using a combination of personal services and online tools (New York, NY).
- Starling Health offers an intuitive, touchscreen bedside communication system for hospitals to improve patient interaction at the point of care and help streamline the nurse triage and communication process (New York, NY).
- AgeTak unleashes big data in healthcare from dispersed data silos in real-time based on consent from the true owner of the data. It offers privacy-protecting big-data solutions for analytics in healthcare (Hopkins, MN).
- HealthLoop offers an automated patient follow-up solution that tracks patient recovery and improves outcomes by engaging patients with their doctor between visits (San Francisco, CA).
- Comprisma (special candidate) makes health insurance markets healthier by providing risk markets for health insurers to share risk with one another, reducing the uncertainty and volatility in aggregate policy experience (Washington, D.C.).
